IO-Link photoelectric sensors detect up to 20 meters

The new additions to Balluff’s family of IO-Link photoelectric sensors rated to IP67 and IP69 offer a detection range of up to 20 meters.

Balluff has expanded its BOS21M series of IO-Link photoelectric sensors with three new versions that offer a detection range of up to 20 meters and are suited for detecting objects of any kind even in harsh environments. The new additions deliver three optical operations — a diffuse sensor, a retroflective sensor, and a through-beam emitter and receiver. They are IP67 and IP69K rated and Ecolab approved thanks in part to a newly designed rugged metal housing with improved sealing and a plastic lens, said the company.

Balluff BOS21M IO Link photoelectric sensorsA key feature of the sensors is a highly visible red light with a large light spot (an inch square at one meter), which eases set up and alignment. Target applications include packaging, food and beverage, as well as general factory automation.

The diffuse version can detect objects up to one meter, the retroreflective version up to eight meters, and the through-beam up to 20 meters. Adjustments are made via a potentiometer.

The IO-Link interface provides all the traditional benefits of an IO-Link, said Balluff, including simple installation and reliable diagnostics.

In September, Balluff introduced a series of IO-Link Starter kits as a low-cost introduction to IO-Link. Available in three kits for measurement, sensing, and traceability, they all include Balluff’s IO-Link Master and I/O hub, inductive and capacitive sensors, DIN C style valve connectors, and a three-segment SmartLight tower light. Devices specific to each area of application are also included.

The kits also feature Balluff’s Device Manager software and videos demonstrating configuration and monitoring of each included device. There is no PLC required for device configuration and all required cables and connectors are included, said the company.
