IO-Link transceiver delivers faster reconfiguration for smart factories

Maxim Integrated has released a reference design for the MAX22515 IO-Link transceiver that enables faster reconfiguration to reduce factory downtime.

Maxim Integrated Products, Inc. has introduced the MAXREFDES177# IO-Link reference design that demonstrates the performance of the MAX22515 IO-Link transceiver and the MAX22000 software-configurable analog IO. This chipset provides greater flexibility in smart factory applications with faster reconfiguration of a sensor’s electrical characteristics to reduce factory downtime.

The chipset solution builds on the benefits of the IO-Link’s two-way universal interface, said Maxim Integrated. The IO-Link interface allows every IO-Link sensor, actuator or IO expansion module to be interchangeable to a standard hardware interface. It also provides software-defined performance parameters and selectable analog input or output performance modes.

Maxim MAXREFDES177 IO Link transceiver reference designThe MAX22000 software-configurable analog IO provides up to more than half the power savings and approximately half the size compared to the closest competitive solutions on the market, according to the company. The MAX22000 integrates key functions such as a 24-bit ADC analog input mode and an 18-bit DAC analog output mode, and offers operation over either a single 2-wire interface or a 4-wire resistance temperature detector (RTD)/thermocouple (TC) temperature measurement.

Maxim Integrated claims the MAX22515 is the industry’s smallest ±1.2 kV/500 Ω surge-protected, single-channel IO-Link transceiver. The device integrates protection diodes, auxiliary digital input, I2C or pin control, integrated oscillator, and a selectable 3.3-V or 5-V LDO, which help to provide high configurability and reduce SKU.

In addition, the MAX22515 enables half the power dissipation thanks to the low 2.2 Ω or 2.65 Ω (typ) C/Q driver on-resistance compared to the closest competitor, in the smallest 2.5 x 2.0-mm WLP package, said Maxim. It also cuts the solution size by up to 67 percent compared to the closest competitor.

The MAX22000 is available at Maxim Integrated’s website, and through the company’s authorized distributors. The MAX22515AWP+ and MAX22515AWP+T are available at Maxim’s website for $1.45 (1000-up, FOB USA) and from authorized distributors.  The MAXREFDES177# reference design and MAX22000EVKIT# evaluation kit can be purchased at the company’s website for $65 and $135, respectively.

Maxim Integrated also offers a previous generation MAX22513 dual-driver IO-Link device transceiver with DC/DC regulator and surge protection, along with an evaluation kit and reference design.
