While reports of Apple ditching the headphone jack on the next iPhone have dominated much of the conversation, there is a new rumor that should make everyone happy.
Recent reports suggest that Apple will soon be ditching the 16GB iPhone. On Tuesday, The Wall Street Journal reported that the next generation of iPhones due out in the fall will jump to 32GB, a much more reasonable minimum for those who still want to store plenty of photos and apps.
While Apple made several changes to iOS in the past few years to make the 16GB and 8GB iPhones and iPads more livable, it still hindered many users. Sure, the company reduced the amount of storage space needed to install updates, introduced iCloud Photo Library as a way to free up local storage, and launched App Thinning, which reduced the size or installed apps on the back-end.
However, these were countered in part by space-eating camera features such as Live Photos, 12-megpixel images, and 4K video. Apple’s answer in the past was selling the 64GB model for $100 more than the 16GB, which may have helped its average iPhone selling price, but in turn, decreased the user experience and satisfaction.
The latest report states that aside from starting at 32GB, the next iPhone will also come in 128GB and 256GB models. The increases are likely due to the expected camera improvements that Apple announced will accompany the next generation iPhone.
Of course with every iPhone rumor, we won’t know for sure until Apple formally introduces the device in the fall (likely September). If nothing else, let’s hope this one is true, and we can finally say goodbye to the 16GB iPhone.
