Isolation memory buffer raises capacity and speed in DDR3 systems

The iMB01-GS02 isolation memory buffer is a single chip that reduces the load on the memory controller by buffering both data and address lanes. By isolating the CPU from the memory components and then buffering the memory, I/O, control, and data signals, DDR3 memory DIMM modules (called LRDIMM) can provide up to a 384-Gbyte capacity versus a 192-Gbyte-capacity limit for current RDIMs. Each module can support up to 32 Gbytes.

And, LRDIMM modules can operate at a full 1,333 MHz with three DIMMs per channel, where DDR3 RDIMMS are limited to 800 MHz, in higher-capacity systems. Providing larger memory capacity in a server can reduce the number of servers required in some applications, and thereby reduce power. LRDIMMs can also allow use of lower-density mainstream x4 DRAMs in high-capacity systems to save cost and power. (Engineering samples, $26 — samples now, prod qty, 1st qtr 2010.)
