Just like Daenerys Targaryen, you too can own a flying, fire-breathing dragon

Company launches fun new toy with enormous price tag tied to it

If you’re a fan of Game of Thrones, specifically Daenerys Targaryen and her fire-breathing dragons, then be prepared to get very, very excited — Hammacher Schlemmer has announced the launch of a brand new device ready for purchase: a nine-foot-long flying, fire-breathing dragon.

Now, while the geek in you is probably looking for the “buy now” link, your practical side should be made aware that this half-drone / half-dragon comes with a mighty big price tag: at $60,000, the dragon is less a toy, and more on the level of a luxury vehicle.

There are plenty of reasons why the price tag is so expensive. For one, there’s nothing else like it on the market right now. Also, the technology that goes into making this thing work is incredible. For one, the dragon can fly through the air at speeds of up to 70 mph. When on the ground, its red LED eyes light up every time the dragon spits out one of its 3-foot-long blasts of flame (sadly, they did not give the dragon the ability to fly and fire at the same time).

A mini turbine engine is built into the dragon’s chest and provides a rear-based thrust that measures approximately 500 mph at the point of exit. Worth noting is that in order to get that much power, the dragon requires a half-gallon of jet aircraft fuel or kerosene. Filling it up will give the user about 10 minutes of flight / fire time.

The dragon’s head swivels in the direction of its turns, and it can climb / dive via the wing’s ailerons and elevators built into its V-tail rudder. Everything is controlled vis-à-vis the device’s 2.4-GHz radio remote.

As for the other parts of the dragon’s body, its four clawed feet have 3”-diameter rubber wheels for braking and steering while on the ground. The outer shell was aerodynamically designed and constructed from a Nomex core layered between two sections of epoxy glass. The dragon’s internal structure is made from high-grade plywood, to keep it light and easy to maneuver through the air.

There are, obviously, certain restrictions associated with ordering a gadget like this, so you may want to check your state’s laws and regulationsprior to ordering your $60,000, 9- foot-long, 9-foot-wide, 20-inch-high Hfire-breathing dragon.
