LabVIEW software platform speeds design, test with multicore smarts

System parallelizes application execution and enhances coverage for FPGAs, wireless, and control development

Building on the inherently parallel nature of its graphical programming constructs, LabVIEW 8.6 software — the latest version of the widely used and supported design and test environment — adds features for multicore processors, FPGAs, and wireless communication. The improvements are said to significantly accelerate product design and test for a broad variety of applications.

Many of the software’s analysis functions are now optimized for faster math and signal processing on multicore systems. The program’s Vision Development Module automatically distributes data sets across multiple cores, letting apps harness the power of multiple processors with much less user effort.

For FPGA development, new simulation features reduce the number of time-consuming compilations by validating an FPGA application on the desktop. New IP development and integration features, including the new fast Fourier transform (FFT) IP core to offload spectral analysis functions, can increase performance of apps such as machine-condition monitoring and RF test.

The features also add new dimension for test, accelerating development of emulation-based ATE so users can mimic system components before actual hardware is available. This capability lets designs and test programs be validated earlier for both design and manufacturing.

New functions for wireless technology, including drivers for 22 third-party wireless sensors, allow acquisition and analysis of data from remote systems. New 3D visualization tools help users integrate remote measurements with design models to accelerate design validation. Also, users can easily import third-party IP into LabVIEW FPGA using the new component-level IP (CLIP) node. (From $1,199 — available now.)
