LED boasts the highest level of lumen density

Cree has launched what it calls the industry’s first extreme-density LED for color-tuning, portable, industrial, and street-lighting applications. The XLamp XD16 high-power LED combines breakthrough lumen density, low optical crosstalk, and ease of system manufacturing to help create a broad spectrum of lighting designs.
0218_Roundup_Cree_LED Cree’s new LED delivers a lumen density of more than 284 lumens per square-millimeter, which, according to the company, is the highest level achieved by a commercially available lighting-class LED.

“The LED delivers this lumen density without the design and manufacturing challenges associated with conventional LED technology approaches,” said Dave Emerson, executive vice president and general manager at Cree LEDs. “The lumen output and peak intensity facilitate better beam control and decrease the overall size and weight of lighting designs.”

According to Emerson, the XD16 LED reduces system-level optical loss by up to three times versus competing technologies when LEDs are placed closer to each other on the board. And this improvement translates into fewer wasted lumens and higher efficiency for lighting products.

Cree’s new LEDs are characterized and binned at 85°C, and they are available in ANSI White, EasyWhite three- and five-step color temperatures, and CRI options of 70, 80, and 90.
