LED display module has 1-in.-high characters

To allow readability at up to 40 ft, the series 6800 LED display modules
have 1-in.-high characters that are formed using a high-definition 7 x 10
dot matrix. Initial offerings come in 1 x 12 and 1 x 20 formats, with red,
green, yellow, or “bright” red LEDs. The modules are microprocessor
controlled and have a bidirectional 9,600-baud RS-422 serial interface
with an RS-449 I/O connector. The on-board character-generator ROM
provides for 96-character U.S. ASCII, General European, Cyrillic,
Katakana, and Hebrew characters. Up to 16 custom characters can be
downloaded. The displays have four software-controlled brightness levels,
along with character blinking, horizontal scrolling capabilities, and a
viewing angle of 150 degrees. Power requirements are 5 Vdc at 2.3 A for
the 1 x 20 and 1.4 A for the 1 x 12. This is at the brightest level of 1.
35 mcd. for the standard red, yellow, and green LEDs. Red versions are
available with an output of 8.1 mcd. Both the 12- and 20-character units
measure 2.5 (H) x 0.9 (D) in. The widths are 13.85 and 20.55 in.,
respectively. (1 x 20, standard red, $244; 1 x 12, standard red, $172
ea/100–4 to 6 weeks ARO.) Industrial Electronic Engineers, Inc., Van
