Plessey is presenting the results of its partnership with Litecool, a thermal solutions provider, to visitors at LuxLive, which takes place at ExCel in London from 19th to 20th November. Plessey is showcasing its large area LED die assembled in the Litecool MicroSpot product at its stand D31.
Litecool develops and manufactures advanced and innovative heat management solutions for LED lighting products. Its LED module allows the LED diodes to be mounted directly on to the heat spreader without anything underneath to obstruct the escaping heat. This offers lighting product designers an LED module that stays cooler allowing the use of smaller, lower cost heat sinks. This helps the LED stay efficient, maintain a good light quality and also last longer.
The Plessey large area LED die is based on its leading GaN-on-Silicon MaGIC LED technology. The large die benefits from three core features of the Plessey process. The first part is the low thermal resistance of Silicon followed by a single-surface emitter die design and finishing with 6-inch wafer processing. To exploit these benefits, Plessey has produced a 20 sq. mm die design (i.e. 4.5 x 4.5 mm) that will generate up to 5 W of blue light over a 400 to 480 nm wavelength range.
Litecool has packaged the Plessey's large 4.5mm single source LED emitter into its advanced 10 W MicroSpot package with the thermal resistance (junction to heat sink) of just 0.7°C/W, producing a beam angle of just 18 degrees and a luminance size of just 42 mm.
Litecool's CEO, James Reeves, said, “We have used our latest generation of technology to ensure ground breaking thermal resistance for this unique package. This powerful single source emitter works exceptionally well with secondary optics and with our technology keeping it cool. I can see this being a hit in the spotlight market where high lumen density is essential.”
David Owen, Plessey's Marketing Director said, “Plessey is pleased to be working closely with an innovative company such as Litecool here in the UK who are focusing on the heat management of LED die which is a critical aspect of the design of lighting products adopting LEDs. Recent performance improvements in the efficacy of our LEDs have enabled Plessey's GaN-on-Silicon MaGIC LEDs to be competitive with any LED technology. Plessey's technology has already shown how we can overcome what up to now has been a significant cost barrier in large-scale LED illumination. The use of Litecool's LED module technology enables us to maintain the lumen density not just at source but at luminaire level – a 10 W spotlight that is just 42 mm in diameter.”
Plessey's range of products for lighting applications will be showcased at LuxLive, ExCel London, 19-20 November, Stand D31. The show will open on Wednesday 19th November from 9am to 9pm and on Thursday 20th November from 9am to 5pm. The show is free to attend. For free tickets please visit: http://www.luxlive.co.uk/register-2014/. There will be innovative demonstrations by technical and design experts for Plessey's LED technology at the stand. This is an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Plessey's latest products and solutions for the commercial, industrial, consumer and wearable lighting segments.
Plessey's MaGIC (Manufactured on GaN-on-Si I/C) High Brightness LED (HBLED) technology has won numerous awards for its innovation and ability to cut the cost of LED lighting by using standard silicon manufacturing techniques.
