Aisle of light
LED manufacturers are winning new customers all the time with the dramatically improved MTBF and lumens/W compared to incandescent bulbs. Recently, Tops Friendly Markets, a grocery retailer in the northeast U.S., selected LED lighting by Cree to illuminate its 51,364-square-foot store in Geneva, NY. The store features Cree CS18 luminaires and CR24 troffers lighting the aisles, specialty departments and pharmacy. The store expects to save 70% energy over the T5 fluorescent lighting. This type of changeover becomes important to companies that are open 24/7 because it directly affects their bottom line. Find out more at www.cree.com/lighting/grocery/topsmarkets.

Webinar
LED street lighting case studies
On Wednesday, May 8, DOE's Municipal Solid-State Street Lighting Consortium will host a 90-minute live webinar entitled Member Case Studies: LED Street Lighting Programs in Algona (IA), Asheville (NC), and Boston (MA). Presenters John Bilsten of Algona Municipal Utilities, Maggie Ullman of the City of Asheville, and Glenn Cooper of the City of Boston will provide perspective on planning, financing, and implementation of LED street lighting programs. Customer perspectives and lessons learned from the installation processes will also be shared. These experiences will help attendees gain a better understanding of the most common components of LED street lighting programs and the challenges many cities face when implementing them.
The webinar will begin at 1:00 p.m. EDT (10:00 a.m. PDT) and will include a 60-minute presentation, followed by a 30-minute question-and-answer session with attendees. IES continuing education credits will be offered. For more information, or to register, visit the DOE SSL website ( http://www1.eere.energy.gov/buildings/ssl/events_detail.html?event_id=7874 ).
LED demo report
The U.S. Department of Energy has published the evaluation report from a demonstration at the parking structure of the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) headquarters in Washington, DC. LED luminaires were substituted for the incumbent high-pressure sodium (HPS) luminaires and evaluated for relative light quantity and performance.
The demonstration results show energy savings of 52% from the initial conversion of HPS to the LED product. These savings were increased to 88% by using occupancy-sensor controls that were ultimately set to reduce power to 10% of high-state operation after a time delay of 2.5 minutes. This adjustment was made after it was determined that the factory-default 10-minute delay setting was much longer than necessary.
Because of the relatively high cost of the LED luminaires at their time of purchase for this project, the simple payback periods were 6.5 years and 4.9 years for retrofit and new-construction scenarios, respectively. Staff at DOL headquarters reported high satisfaction with the operation of the LED product. The report is available for download at www.ssl.energy.gov/gatewaydemos_results.html.
