LEDs hit the mark for 35-50-W halogen, small-bulb replacement

The multi-die XLamp MT-G lighting-class LED series has been specifically designed for use in SSL retrofits for 35 to 50-W halogen MR16 bulbs and other accent, track, display, and down lighting. Manufactured using EasyWhite and high-temperature-binning technology, they are said to be the first commercial LEDs to deliver sufficient light output to replace traditional high-output small form-factor bulbs used for directional lighting in applications such as retail stores, residential, museums and art galleries, and landscaping.

The LEDs are designed for small-footprint requirements; the LED die are all contained in an 8-mm-diameter circle to meet the space constraints of standard MR16 optics. The complete footprint of the device is just 9.1 x 9.1 mm, yet it can deliver 560 lm in warm white (3,000K) at 1.1 A (an output equivalent to that of a 35 to 50-W halogen lamp) or up to 1,525 lm. Furthermore, these outputs are measured at 85°C, a realistic operating temperature for such devices, which simplifies luminaire design.

The multiple die that go into each LED are selected so as to tightly control color consistency, and users are offered two consistency levels — a four-step and a tighter two-step — to meet their color-matching requirements. LEDs are available in both neutral (4,000 and 3,500K) and warm (3,000 and 2,700K) white, with respective CRIs of 80 and 82. They operate from a 6-V source and have a 125° viewing angle.

The company also provides a reference design (mtg.cree.com) with two different types of optics that should prove helpful in evaluating LED performance and design characteristics. (From less than $10 ea /prod qty — samples available immediately, prod qty with standard lead times.)
