For the first time, Lego is breaking away from simple physical blocks and jumping into the digital world of gaming by combining virtual reality with the traditional toy.
Lego just announced its Fusion line of toys that will begin shipping in August and September.
Each of the Lego kits will still come with 200 traditional Lego pieces (but surprisingly no instructions as in traditional kits). The four kits being released this summer are “Battle Towers,” “Town Master,” “Create and Race,” and “Resort Designer.”
Once you physically build your scenario using the bricks, it can be transferred onto an iOS or Android device via a free gaming app that you must download.
Each of your creations will then become part of a game, which in turn can become part of the Lego social community.
You can even have your designs battle and interact with others. For instance your newly created racecar can compete against other race cars and your players can visit towns created by other players.
How does your design transfer?
Lego Fusion kits use a Fusion capture plate for you to build your designs. The plate allows for the transference. So you build in 2D on the plate and the app transforms your creation block by block into your 3D world.
The kits are on sale for $34.99.
