LG releases the first solid rollable keyboard for smartphones and tablets

LG’s Rolly keyboard combines flexibility with previous designs to produce a wireless, portable, rollable device.

LG announced the Rolly keyboard, a Bluetooth-powered rollable accessory that resembles a long mobile battery when bundled up. Once uncurled, the Rolly automatically switches on and connects to your nearest tablet or smartphone.

Featuring a fold-out mobile stand and convenient portability, the keyboard is simple to type on as its 17mm key pitch is almost that of a traditional desktop keyboard that has an 18mm key pitch. Made from impact-resistant polycarbonate and ABS plastic, and not silicone like previous models, the four rows of keys are flexible and roll around an extended rectangular box that sits on top of the keyboard when in use. The box features two arms that roll out to support a smartphone or tablet, allowing two different devices to connect to Bluetooth 3.0 and the ability to toggle between the two by pressing a single key. A single AAA battery powers the Rolly keyboard for up to three months of use.

“The goal was to create a product that could add more value to LG smartphones and tablets, while at the same time offering a unique design proposition that hadn’t been explored before,” said Seo Young-jae, vice president in charge of Innovative Personal Devices at LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company.

Expected to debut in September 2015 in the United States and the fourth quarter in Europe, Latin America, and Asia, the price and details on availability will be announced for LG’s Rolly keyboard at the time of launch.
