Linear regulator halves standby power

The TPS780xx 150-mA LDOs have dual-level voltage output for MSP430 microcontroller-based, battery-powered devices. Consuming 500 nA quiescent current the voltage select pin can switch between two voltage levels to customize and cut power consumption in half during operation. Voltages range from 0.8 to 5.0 V, and dropout is 250 mV typ at 150 mA.

The LDO requires no external parts to implement the dynamic-voltage-scaling feature for an 8- or 16-bit MSP430 or other microcontroller designs. The regulator is stable with an output capacitor greater than 0.1 µF. It is available in a 6-pin 2 x 2-mm SON package and is well suited for portable applications. The device provides 3% typ accuracy over load/line/temperature. ($0.75/1,000 — available now.)
