Low-cost HD drive yields 640 Gbytes

The Caviar SE16 3.5-in. hard-disk drive combines 640-Gbyte capacity with a 16-Mbyte cache and a SATA 3-Gbit/s transfer rate. The drive has IntelliSeek, which calculates optimum seek speeds to lower power consumption, noise, and vibration.

The drive also has native command queuing (NCQ), and its two-platter design promotes cool, quiet operation. The device takes 8.3 W in read/write and 1 W in standby. ($139—available now.)
