Low-cost solid-state disk drives are small and light
Units are a quarter the size and weight of a traditional 1.8-in. hard-disk drive
Targeting mobile and desktop computers, the Z-P230 solid-state drives are a cost-effective flash storage solution for hard-disk-drive replacement. They provide a standard PATA interface and 4-, 8-, or 16-Gbyte capacity in a package that is four times smaller and lighter — and much more rugged — than a standard 1.8-in. disk drive.
The 54 x 38 x 4-mm units feature a 1-million-hour MTBF and have maximum throughputs of 35 Mbytes/s read and 7 Mbytes/s write. Weighing only 10 g, the devices take 1.65 mW in idle and typically 314 mW operating, and have a temperature range of 0° to 70°C. (Ea/1,000: 4-Gbyte version, $25; 8-Gbyte, $45—available 3rd qtr, 16-Gbyte available 4th qtr.)
