Lowest-power AFEs are industry’s smallest
8- and 16-channel parts are 70% smaller and use 40% less power than the competition
Available in a 9 x 9-mm package, the 16-channel AFE5851 and the 8-channel AFE5801 analog front ends are offered as the smallest of their kind currently available in the market. They have a 70% smaller footprint than competitive parts and a 40% smaller footprint than previously introduced devices in the AFE58xx family — enabling handheld ultrasound systems that can fit into a doctor’s pocket. In addition, both parts achieve at least 40% power savings over the competition if they are preceded in the design by a transformer or an off-chip low-noise amplifier, which can be located on the probe.
The AFE5851 features 39 mW/channel at 32.5 Msamples/s and integrates 16 VGAs and eight 12-bit, 65-Msample/s A/D converters. The AFE5801 features 50 mW/channel at 30 Msamples/s and 58 mW/channel at 50 Msamples and integrates eight VGAs and eight 12-bit, 65 Msamples/s high-speed ADCs with LVDS data outputs. (Ea/1,000: AFE5801, $52; AFE5851, $92 samples available now; prod qty, December.)
