Lumileds recently launched LUXEON IR for Automotive, a family of infrared (IR) emitters developed for automotive sensing applications. Designed for both interior and exterior automotive applications, these IR emitters target driver monitoring systems, gesture control, and night vision.
Consisting of the LUXEON IR Compact Line and the LUXEION IR Domed Line, both product lines use a ceramic substrate to dissipate heat, thereby providing the best thermal conductivity among comparable products on the market, according to the company.
The LUXEON IR Compact Line features what the company boasts is the smallest power infrared emitter in the industry, saving developers critical design space and affording them greater flexibility. These are well-suited for exterior optical systems, such as head- or taillights for lane-departing systems, IR illumination at night, or during bad weather conditions.
The LUXEON IR Domed Line can be configured to emit infrared light in four distinct radiation patterns (50°, 60°, 90°, and 150°), making them suitable for interior applications like driver monitor systems (DMS) and occupancy detection.
“With the introduction of the LUXEON IR Family for Automotive, Lumileds is offering the automotive industry a range of infrared emitters that will enable further implementation of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) in the next generation of cars,” according to Wouter Schrama, senior product manager for the LUXEON IR Family.
The LUXEON IR Family for Automotive is compliant with the Automotive Electronics Council qualification review (AEC-Q102). Both the LUXEON Domed and Compact lines will begin shipping by the end of 2018.
