Magnetic sensor adds new dimension in performance

The MLX90333 3-D Triaxis Hall-effect device not only promises to change the way joysticks work, but also opens a world of new possibilities for sensor designs. Key to this capability is the device’s ability to detect and measure the position of a permanent magnet within a three-dimensional volume, not a two-dimensional area like previous devices.

The MEMS-based sensor uses a patented technologyIntegrated Magneto Concentrators, or IMC — to allow CMOS Hall IC technology to perform true three-axis magnetic flux measurements on a single chip, which also has a DSP that converts raw sensor measurements into absolute position. On-chip programmable memory lets users customize operating parameters, such that different magnets and mechanical motions can be measured with the same chip and production tolerances can be zeroed out. Redundant sensing can also be built in for situations where high reliability is a must.
