Let’s be honest here: we are all disappointed that by 2014, jetpacks are not the preferred method of travel. But at least a company called Dreamscience has taken the first step, by inventing handheld jet thrusters that make everything—literally, everything —that you do intensely awesome.
Yeah, it’s not quite repulsor technology, but we have to start somewhere. Dreamscience have not yet released make or model details about their innovation, though they do say that the recent advancements in the field of rechargeable lithium polymer batteries made their creation possible. Their handheld electric jet thrusters use four 8-kW motors to spin blades up to 30,000 rpm, somehow without creating the normal scorching heat that would accompany those rotations.
Dreamscience has completed several promising trial runs for the thrusters, including the snowboarder above. Using the company’s invention, the snowboarder reached 50mph in mere seconds on a completely flat run.
And now for the bad news. The company is absolutely nowhere near ready to start selling this commercially—and even when they do, their assumed asking price for the first one available is $10,000. Eventually, they hope to move the price tag down to $5,000 a pop, because the universe does not want me to have nice things.
If the price hasn’t put you off, you can find more information about these thrusters on Dreamscience.
