The NCAA Men’s Basketball championship kicks off on March 15, and this year, fans who own an Apple TV will have a new way to view multiple games at once. The new March Madness live streaming app has a distinctive feature for Apple TV users that are paying TV subscribers, which allows them to watch two games side-by-side.
Developed in partnership with CBS and Turner Sports, the new NCAA app will be released March 10, 2016 for Apple TV and will be further pushed out this year to other platforms, including Amazon Fire, Roku, and smart TVs. Only Apple TV users will get the split screen feature, however, so they won’t have to miss any upsets or a buzzer beating finish.
In a live demonstration hosted by Turner Sports on Monday in Los Angeles, the new app’s design allowed fans to see which games are playing live. It also lets users stream games that have already finished, watch video previews, and see game recaps.
For Apple TV users, the new split-screen feature permits fans to toggle between the audio commentary on both games. Additionally, the March Madness Live app on iOS will support AirPlay, allowing users to instantly beam live video or audio to compatible speakers or the Apple TV. The app will also support Apple Watch, allowing users to receive alerts and updates right to their wrist whenever a game is close, what the NCAA deemed as “excitement alerts.”
The NCAA also updated its GameCenter hub in the March Madness Live app with improved navigation, more curated social content, and an improved immerse live video experience. Also, the Video on Demand features have been improved, offering quick access to tournament moments, match-up analysis, game previews, top plays, and featured videos.
