The mbed development platform for ARM processors now has an Internet of Things version that includes free operating system software. The standard platform for MCU and tool suppliers is built around open standards and targets energy and cost-constrained devices.
The mbed OS for ARM Cortex-M processor based devices provides security, communication, and device management features and will be available to mbed partners in Q4 2014 for early development. It supports Bluetooth Smart, 2G, 3G, LTE and CDMA cellular technologies, Thread, Wi-Fi, and 802.15.4/6LoWPAN along with TLS/DTLS, CoAP, HTTP, MQTT and Lightweight M2M. The mbed.org website provides a comprehensive database of hardware development kits, reference applications, documentation, web-based development tools, and is a repository for re-usable software components. Many versions of the IoT platform will be made by various MCU and tool suppliers.
