Mediatek has invented the first legit octa-core mobile processor, MT6592. This announcement could potentially intimidate the likes of Qualcomm, who competes in the same marketplace MediaTek. The first MediaTek devices to feature the new processors are set to hit the market by the end of this year, fully equipped with ARM’s bit.LITTLE processing design. The 28-nm chip includes eight low-power Cortex-A7 cores. The Heterogeneous Multi-Processing is used by the chip to distribute tasks, covering all CPU, GPU, DSP, multimedia, display engines, sensor cores, and multiple connectivity. With these developments, all eight cores can function at the same time. Scheduling algorithms are used to maximize energy efficiency with functionality can occur between 1.7 and 2 GHz.
MediaTek acknowledges that Google Chrome successfully uses all eight cores, map apps, and video players that have multi-window functions. The MT6592 is expected to surpass the figures calculated from the quad-core Snapdragon 800, including power consumption as low as 40% and reduced temperature.
The MT6592 is equipped with many special features. It has an image signal processor that backs 16-Mpixel camera modules. The ARM Mali-450-MP graphics processor, DSP with multi-connectivity, works at 700 MHz, supplying it with a full working HD UI drawing of 60 frames/s to benefit in-game performance. Video frame rate upscaling to 60 fps is also included in the chip to reduce motion blurring. 4K H.264 video decoding plus full HD H.265/VP9 playback can save space when storing data.
MediaTek will challenge the 4G territory that is currently held by Qualcomm. MediaTek is set to launch their own 4G modem by early 2014, and the device manufacturers will then start to use it in tandem with MediaTek’s quad-core or octa-core chips.
Even though the average tech-user won't notice a difference with this technology, heavy tech-users and gamers will definitely appreciate the improvement. The first shipments for chipsets are anticipated to top over 200 million. The MT6592 will also appear on the 2014 models of Android KitKat devices.
