STMicroelectronics has announced the LSM6DSR , an inertial MEMS system-in-package module for gaming, industrial, and sports applications. Designed for use in head-mounted displays, wearable trackers, smartphones, robotics, and drones, the module offers high stability over temperature and time, advanced digital features, and low power consumption. Other applications include sensor hubs, IoT devices, and indoor navigation.

The LSM6DSR enables high-performance augmented reality (AR) on new smartphones, including a native advanced pedometer, step-detector, and step-counter functions. It powers immersive virtual reality (VR) experiences in gaming and professional applications and it provides optical image stabilization necessary in drone-mounted cameras. With significant motion and tilt detection, the module also ensure accurate and efficient activity recognition.

The LSM6DSR module targets demanding and fast AR, VR, and tracking.

Incorporated into the module are a three-axis digital accelerometer and a three-axis digital gyroscope featuring an extended full-scale angular rate of 4,000 degrees per second for gaming and sports applications. It is compliant with major mobile operating systems and supports Synchronization for Sensors (S4S). It also delivers real, virtual, and batch sensing and a 9-Kbyte FIFO with compression for dynamic data batching.

Its design provides high stability thanks to its mechanical design that minimizes bias and offset drift and an embedded temperature sensor that mitigates the impact of temperature change. It also eliminates the need for the host system to perform complex recalibration, saving power and maximizing performance.

The LSM6DSR, housed in a 2.5 × 3 × 0.83-mm 14-pin plastic LGA package, is currently available from $3.00 for 1,000 units.
