MEMS microphone offers top performance with top-port design

Designed for mobile phones, tablets, and other smart consumer devices, the MP34DT01 MEMS microphone employs a patent-pending technology that let its designers place the microphone membrane closer to the acoustic port hole on the top of the package, substantially increasing performance with no size penalty. Housed in an ultra-small (3 x 4 x 1-mm) package, the device provides an SNR of 63 dB and flat frequency response in the full 20 to 20,000-Hz audio band.

The device was designed to match the needs of AI speech-recognition systems — such as the recently introduced iPhone 4S’s Siri — improving audio intelligibility without increasing the main-processor workload. The device’s SNR also suits it for application in instruments such as phonometers that require high dynamic range.

The acoustic sensor technology (developed jointly by STMicroelectronics and OMRON) is said to be inherently less susceptible to mechanical vibration, temperature variations, and electromagnetic interference, while providing high-fidelity reproduction of audio signals at low power consumption. The device has also been designed to pair directly with the manufacturer’s latest Sound Terminal audio processing chips.
