Microchip intros Qi2 wireless charging reference design

Microchip’s dsPIC33-based wireless dual-pad charging reference design supports the Qi2 MPP and EPP profiles with a single controller.

Microchip Technology Inc. has introduced a Qi v2.0 (Qi2) dual-pad wireless power transmitter reference design to help charger manufacturers, including in the automotive industry, implement  Qi v2.0 (Qi2) standards. The wireless dual-pad charging design is powered by a single dsPIC33 digital signal controller (DSC).

The DSC’s software architecture enables the support of both the Magnetic Power Profile (MPP) and the Extended Power Profile (EPP) of the Qi 2.0 standard with one controller. The MPP is a new feature of the Qi2 standard, recently released by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC).

Aimed at automotive charger module manufacturers, the automotive-grade hardware and software solution includes support for AUTomotive Open System Architecture (AUTOSAR), AUTOSAR Microcontroller Abstraction Layer Architecture (MCALs) and functional safety. It provides programmability to optimize MPP Power Loss Accounting (MPLA) and Q-Based Foreign Object Detection (Q-FOD).

Hardware is reconfigurable and capable of supporting most transmitter topologies. The dual-pad transmitter supports both Qi 2.0 and Qi 1.3. The design also features UART-USB communication and GUI for advanced reporting/debugging of data packets.

The dual-pad charger meets automotive standards for reliability and safety, integrating several of Microchip’s automotive-qualified parts, including an integrated CryptoAuthentication IC that provides security to meet the authentication requirement of Qi standards. Using the Qi2 reference design will help reduce customer risk in certifying their final product, which is required to pass through the Qi certification process, Microchip said.

The design includes the dsPIC33 DSC, capable of integrating Near Field Communication (NFC) for card detection/protection and communication; a TA100/TA010 Trust Anchor secure storage subsystem provisioned by Microchip as a licensed WPC Manufacturer Certificate Authority as well as Microchip’s ATA6563 CAN transceiver, MCP14700 gate drivers and MCP16331 and MCP1755 regulators.
