The eighth annual Microgrid Deployment Tracker shows that the market is robust. A host of new government programs has been launched since the 2014 update, thus shedding light on new project development, especially on the East Coast of the United States. However, the majority are proposed or are under early development and are not actually delivering energy services today.
As of 2Q 2015, Navigant Research has identified a total of 12,031 MW of total microgrid capacity throughout the world, up from 4,393 MW in 2Q 2014—a near tripling of the known scope of the microgrid market. The 2Q 2015 Tracker supports the idea that Asia Pacific may emerge as the market leader over the long term, with data collected from projects and project portfolios representing 47% of global capacity, compared to North America’s 44%. If one looks at the microgrids that are currently online, however, North America still leads; the region holds a nearly identical market share (66%) compared with data presented in 2Q 2014 (65%). In terms of segments, the remote segment is the clear leader in terms of both numbers of projects and overall capacity, representing 46% of the total microgrid market. This represents a doubling of its market share compared to data collected in 2Q 2014.
This Navigant Research report tracks data on known grid-tied and remote microgrid projects in the operating, planned/under development, and proposed stages in six principal geographies. The report covers seven microgrid segments: commercial/industrial, community, utility distribution, institutional/campus, military, remote systems, and direct current (DC) systems. Specific information is provided on the capacity of the following generation assets: diesel, combined heat and power (CHP), solar PV, wind, and fuel cells. The Tracker also details the rated capacity, duration, and types of energy storage for each project and breaks out data by world region and microgrid segment.
