Microtune's Wideband Tuner Deployed in First Certified DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modems

Microtune announced that a new class of ultra-fast wideband cable modems featuring its MicroTuner MT2170 tuner chip that has achieved certification status by CableLabs for the DOCSIS 3.0 specifications.

DOCSIS 3.0 modems can now quadruple downstream transmission speeds to at least 160 Mbps in residential data and voice services and 160 Mbps in video and business services. This ultra-fast Internet throughput permits cable operators to cost-effectively offer compelling, competitive new bandwidth-intensive Internet services, including high-definition video downloads, video file exchanges, time-shifted and place-shifted video, Internet-Protocol (IP) voice and interactive on-line gaming.

The MicroTuner MT2170 is a 1-gigahertz (GHz) input tuner based on the new CableLabs DOCSIS 3.0 specification. It functions as a 'gateway' component–it receives and tunes the signals, embedded with data and/or voice, delivered over the cable network to the subscriber. When integrated into cable modems, Embedded Multimedia Terminal Adaptors (EMTAs) or video-over-IP set-top boxes, the MT2170 tuner is engineered to deliver impressive downstream data speeds (Mbps) via a wide IF bandwidth (up to 96 MHz), enabling cable operators to efficiently offer bandwidth-intensive services at a very competitive cost.
