Mil/aero products

Military and aerospace products are some of the most difficult to design because they must meet the extremely high levels of reliability and performance. Companies that make them must also meet rigorous qualification standards before they can be accepted into the specialized fraternity of manufacturers. Here is a collection of products in a variety of categories that address the mil/aero demands.

Power

The RWY 65 series of encapsulated dc/dc converters from Absopulse (www.absopulse.com) generate 500-W output power from a compact enclosure, and provides 12-, 24-, 36-, 48-, or 110-Vdc outputs. Designed to meet the EN50155 requirements, this converter is suitable for industrial, mining, military, oil rigs, and transportation applications.

The HD365 series of ac/dc switching power supplies from Digital Power (www.digipwr.com) deliver up to 365 W in the industry-standard 3 x 5-in. footprint, yielding a power density of 18W/in3 and fits in a 1.3-in., 1U-high space. Four models provide outputs voltages of 5, 12, 24, and 48 V with efficiencies from 86% to 94%.

The CB75T series from Martek Power (www.martekpowerabbott.com) is a 75-W triple-output dc/dc power converter measuring 2 x 2.75 x 0.5 in. It offers an input range from 16 to 40 Vdc and output from 3.3 or 5 Vdc main, with ±12- or ±15-Vdc auxiliaries. Standard features include remote turn-on / TTL, synchronization input, overvoltage protection, overcurrent protection, and 500-kHz fixed-frequency power conversion. It is available in unscreened and screened grades.

Embedded

The BU-65590I multi-I/O PCI card from Data Device (www.ddc-web.com) provides four dual redundant MIL-STD-1553 channels, sixteen ARINC 429 receive channels, four ARINC 429 transmit channels, six user programmable digital discrete I/Os, two RS-232 serial I/O channels, two RS-422/485 serial I/O channels, and an IRIG-B time synchronization input.

Modules

Mimix Asia (www.mimixasia.com) offers the XZ1002-BD 8.5 to 11 GHz GaAs monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) core chip, which consists of integrated transmit/receive switches, an LNA, a 6-bit phase shifter, a 5-bit attenuator, and a driver amplifier. The core chip features parallel data input and compensated on-chip gate bias and delivers 21-dB RX gain, 23.5-dB transmit P1dB, and 28-dBm receive OIP3. The transmit amplifier also has a typical small signal gain of 19 dB.

Voxtel (www.voxtel-inc.com) integrated a Nextreme Thermal Solutions (www.nextreme.com) OptoCooler UPF4 thermoelectric cooler into its VDHAX line of hermetically packaged avalanche photodiode (APD) receivers. The optocooler removes a maximum of 610 mW of heat at 85C ambient in a footprint of 0.55 mm2 . The APD device targets military laser radar and optical communications and commercial telecommunications applications.

Skyworks Solutions (www.skyworksinc.com) offers the SMS7621-096 and SMS7630-093-packaged silicon RF Schottky diodes in a 0201 SMT footprint. The SMS7621-096 is well suited for a variety of applications including high sensitivity RF power detection, video sampling circuits, and low conversion loss balanced mixers. The SMS7630-093 is a very-low-barrier zero-bias silicon RF Schottky diode that is ideal for ultrasensitive video detectors and sampling applications. Both diodes can operate over a wide temperature range of 65 to 150C and are suited for both military and commercial applications.

Packaging

Maxim Integrated Products (www.maxim-ic.com) introduces its /PR family of ruggedized, plastic-encapsulated devices for high-reliability military and aerospace applications. The /PR devices are 100% burned-in for 120 hours at +135C and tri-temp tested at military temperatures. The portfolio includes CMOS analog multiplexers, SPST analog switches, RS-232 drivers/receivers, Transformer driver for isolated RS-485 interface, op amps, transceivers, boost regulators, LDOs, comparators, and more.
