Mioty Alliance adds new solutions for massive IoT applications

Mioty Alliance members open up new opportunities for massive IoT applications with new products, ranging from wireless SoCs to gateways.

The Mioty Alliance, launched in February 2020, has increased its portfolio with several new products that support the software-based Mioty technology. The ETSI-compliant massive IoT protocol is designed to address the common limitations of LPWAN solutions. The technology is hardware-dependent and claims a unique telegram-splitting technology that transmits data with ultra-low-power consumption.

Designed to meet the wireless connectivity needs of IoT applications, the Mioty data packets can travel several kilometers (km) in built-up areas and more than 15 km with line of sight, and is suited for applications such as industrial IoT or smart cities, requiring only a few base stations to cover large industrial sites or outdoor areas. It also can collect data from moving devices at 120 km/h velocity without signal fading for applications such as fleet management, asset tracking, and theft detection.

Founders of the alliance include Texas Instruments, Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS, Diehl Metering, Diehl Connectivity Solutions, ifm, Ragsol, Stackforce, and Wika. Their aim is to position the open Mioty technology as a global standard for massive IoT applications.

Mioty stack for ST STM32WL MCUsOne of the newest members is STMicroelectronics. The company recently announced the availability of a protocol stack from ST Authorized Partner Stackforce that allows designers to create Mioty devices using the STM32WL wireless system-on-chip (SoC).

The STM32WL multi-modulation radio IC supports a variety of sub-GHz LPWAN technologies such as LoRaWANSigfox, and wM-Bus.  The stack is available as a library for direct application integration or firmware, ready to be flashed directly onto the SoC for modem-like use, said the company.

Mioty sends messages using an advanced telegram-splitting technique, which ensures extremely short radio transmissions that allow extended operation without the challenges of replacing batteries in massive IoT networks, said ST. In addition, the short transmissions minimize interference with nearby signals and allow thousands of Mioty nodes to coexist on the same network.

Another recent addition to the Mioty family is Radiocrafts’ first shielded Mioty radio-frequency (RF) module that is available for sampling. The compact RC1882CEF-MIOTY1 module, measuring 12.7 × 25.4 × 3.7 mm, is a surface-mounted radio module that contains a communication controller with embedded Mioty protocol software. The module is pre-certified for operation under European (868 MHz) and the U.S. (915 MHz) regulations. It supports an UART interface and an AT command set. It is based on an ultra-narrowband radio with an output power of 14 dBm and a sensitivity of -129 dBm. The module support ultra-low-power modes for battery-operated systems. Applications include smart metering, smart cities, building management, and industrial sensor networks.

Two alliance members, BehrTech and Weptech, have partnered to design a low-cost Mioty gateway. The MYTHINGS certified gateway (AVA) for low-power wide area networks is a bi-directional gateway integrated with the Mioty wireless stack. It comes pre-configured with MYTHINGS Central software by BehrTech, claimed as the only all-in-one network and device management platform built to manage large-scale Mioty LPWA networks.

It gives customers a fast and cost-effective way to deploy and test Mioty networks, said BehrTech.

Other features include support for 868 MHz (Europe) and 915 MHz (North America), an MQTT interface, and cloud connectors for Azure, AWS, and Cumulocity, enabling integration with external systems, third-party applications, and a variety of IoT platforms.

If you’re looking to try out the Mioty technology, Weptech offers a Mioty sample kit. It includes the bi-directional gateway AVA with Mioty profiles for the U.S. and Europe. AVA can be connected to the local network via Ethernet and provides a web interface that gives an overview and insight into all available Mioty traffic. It also includes rudimentary development implementations for Mioty Application and Service Center that allow users to configure development sensors, decode traffic, and forward data via MQTT for analysis.

The sample kit includes one Mioty gateway AVA (including web interface/dashboard), one Mioty indoor temperature and humidity sensor (MUNIA-M), and one Mioty outdoor temperature and humidity sensor (ROBIN-M).

Alliance members offer a variety of hardware solutions, ranging from sensors and modules to boards and development kits, along with software and services.
