A key limitation of most mixed-signal oscilloscopes is their fixed configuration. After users have picked the combination of analog and digital channels they think that they will need, they’re typically stuck with their choice. The 5 Series mixed-signal oscilloscopes (MSOs) take a different approach, offering flexible channels that can act as high-precision analog or eight-line digital inputs as well as offering a variety of performance upgrades available after initial purchase.
0118_POY_Tektronix_MSO58 The base Series 5 unit is available in three models, offering four, six, or eight FlexChannels with a 350-MHz analog bandwidth and 12-bit ADC (16 effective bits) feeding 125M points per channel of data storage at effective sample rates to 6.25 GHz. All units provide a 15.6-in., high-definition (1,920 x 1,080) color touch display with gesture support for pinch, zoom, drag, swipe, and the like and the ability to access controls directly through objects on the display rather than by paging through nested menus. A digital voltmeter/trigger and frequency counter become available after product registration.

A distinguishing feature of the 5 Series is its flexibility for post-acquisition enhancement. One key offering is the series’ ability to convert analog channels into multiple digital channels. Simply by using a TLP058 Logic Probe instead of an analog probe, a user can convert any FlexChannel into an eight-line logic analyzer. The oscilloscope automatically reconfigures its operation to match.

Other post-purchase upgrades include bandwidth enhancement (to 2 GHz), double record lengths (to 250M points), addition of a function generator, and a variety of protocol and analysis functions. Protocols supported include I2 C, USB, RS-232, automotive, and Ethernet. It is also possible to convert the device’s operating system software to Windows 10 for those needing such compatibility. Most upgrades can be performed in the field as well.
