MLCCs feature new soft-termination design

TDK has expanded its CN series of MLCCs with a new soft-termination design and structure for low resistance.

Unlike conventional soft-termination MLCCs with the entire terminal electrodes covered with resin layers, TDK Corp.’s new MLCCs feature a new design and structure where the resin layers cover only the board-mounting side. This allows electric current to pass outside the layers, reducing electrical resistance, said the company.

“MLCCs with soft termination prevent short circuits in power and battery lines,” said TDK. “However, since soft termination has a slightly higher terminal electrode resistance, it is necessary to keep the resistance low to reduce loss.”

The new CN series of soft-termination MLCCs with this structure are the first in the industry, said the company. They are available in the automotive-grade CNA series and the commercial-grade NC series to address applications that require high capacitance values. The automotive grade CNA series is AEC-Q200 compliant.

The MLCCs offer capacitance values up to 22 μF in the 3216 size (3.2 × 1.6 × 1.6 mm) and 47 μF in the 3225 size (3.2 × 2.5 × 2.5 mm). The low-resistance soft termination enables higher capacitances than conventional products, which helps to reduce the number of parts and size, said TDK.

Applications include smoothing and decoupling of the power lines for a variety of automotive electronic control units (ECUs) and smoothing and decoupling of the power lines for industrial robots and other equipment.

Mass production will start in September 2023. These products join the CN series originally released in September 2021.
