MMIC power amplifiers target SATCOM terminals

Qorvo’s three new MMIC power amplifiers are designed to enhance performance and efficiency in satellite uplink systems.

Qorvo, Inc. has announced three new MMIC power amplifiers specifically to enhance the performance and efficiency of Ku-band satellite communications (SATCOM) terminals. These devices address the growing demand for high-speed defense and aerospace data communications.

With an output power ranging from 8 W to 55 W, the three new MMIC power amplifiers, the QPA1314, QPA0016 and QPA0015, give designers the flexibility to choose optimal power for their specific requirements. Fabricated on Qorvo’s 0.15-µm GaN on SiC process, they operate primarily in the 13.75 to 14.5-GHz band, with extended frequency coverage from 12.75 to 15.35 GHz, providing coverage ranging from the lower Ku-band to CDL band. This range delivers flexible operation and communication across various satellite and terrestrial systems.

The new devices also provide higher power-added efficiency for performance gains and power consumption reduction in SATCOM systems. All devices are 100% DC and RF tested to ensure compliance with electrical specifications.

Qorvo said the QPA1314’s copper base and the compact designs of the QPA0016 and QPA0015 provide “superior” thermal performance for greater reliability and longevity in demanding environments.

The QPA1314 50-W power amplifier delivers a saturated output power of 55 W and a linear power of 20 W with 25-dBc third order intermodulation distortion products. Offering a large signal gain of 22.5 dB and 30% power-added efficiency, it is suited for commercial and defense SATCOM and radar applications. The device is packaged in a 15 × 15-mm bolt-down configuration with a copper base.

The QPA0016 supports communications and radar applications in both commercial and military markets. Used in applications requiring 15 W of output power, the amplifier combines high efficiency and a compact 7.5 × 5-mm SMT package, making it suited for a range of SATCOM terminal designs. The device provides 5 W of linear power with 25-dBc third-order intermodulation distortion products. It delivers output power up to 15 W with 35 dB of small-signal gain and 32% power-added efficiency.

The QPA0015 power amplifier delivers 8 W of power in a 7 × 4.5-mm SMT package for high-throughput ground and mobile terminals. The device provides 3 W of linear power with 25-dBc third-order intermodulation distortion products. It delivers output power up to 8 W with 35 dB of small-signal gain and 32% power-added efficiency.

Samples of the QPA1314, QPA0016 and QPA0015 are now available from Qorvo and its distributors. Package sizes include bolt-down and surface-mount options for easy integration into existing and new terminal designs. The new power amplifiers are lead-free and RoHS compliant. In addition, samples and production are available for the previously released QPA0017.
