Motor Driver Platform from STMicroelectronics Simplifies Motion Control Applications
STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM) has introduced a family of monolithic motor drivers that form the heart of an open, scalable solution for a wide range of motion control applications. Leveraging ST’s long-standing leadership in smart power products and technologies, the new powerSPIN platform includes devices suitable for driving DC motors, stepper motors and brushless DC motors, along with a comprehensive support package including evaluation boards, PC software and detailed application notes.
This range of smart motor drivers includes the L6205 and L6225, L6206 and L6226, L6207 and L6227, L6208 and L6228 dual DC or bipolar stepper motors and the L6235 and L6229 for brushless DC motors.
The powerSPIN devices are built with ST’s BCDIII process which combines bipolar, CMOS and isolated DMOS structures on the same chip to provide a robust and proven 60V mixed signal smart power technology. This allows all of the control and power circuitry required to drive the motor to be integrated in a single chip. The high level of integration reduces part count, while the inclusion of protection and diagnostic circuitry results in devices that are robust, reliable and easy to use.
For example, the L6208 integrates all the circuitry required to drive a two-phase stepper motor, including stepper motor including a dual DMOS full bridge, the constant off-time PWM current controller that performs the chopping regulation, and the phase sequence generator that generates the stepping sequence. Similarly, for driving three-phase brushless DC motors, the L6235 integrates a three-phase DMOS bridge, a constant off-time PWM current controller and the decoding logic for single-ended Hall sensors that generates the required sequence for the power stage. Both devices feature non-dissipative over-current protection on the high side Power MOSFETs and thermal shutdown.
