Mouser Electronics Gears Up for 2013 FIRST Championship Event

Global distributor’s support provides students with a “real-world engineering” experience

April 22, 2013 – Mouser Electronics, Inc. today announced that it will participate in the Supplier Showcase at the 2013 FIRST® Championship Event, taking place April 24-27 at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Mo. Through FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), students in grades K-12 are engaged in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering, and technology skills. Mouser's support of the FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC®) provides high-school students with a “real-world engineering” experience.

“All of us here at Mouser are dedicated to inspiring young people's interest in science and technology, and we are proud to sponsor a program that supports the brightest young minds and future engineers,” said Kevin Hess, Mouser's Vice President of Technical Marketing. “The FIRST Robotics Competition provides students with a platform for innovation and a chance to solve real-world engineering challenges while helping to build self-esteem.”

Mouser will have an exhibit in the Supplier Showcase at the FIRST Championship Event, featuring its unique capabilities as the design-fulfillment distributor offering the newest products and advanced technologies. The company was a contributor for the FRC Kit of Parts (KOP) for the 2013 FRC season.

In partnership with the Electronic Components Industry Association (ECIA), Mouser donated thousands of semiconductors and electronic components for the KOP.  Each FRC team receives a KOP, which includes motors, batteries, a control system, a PC, and a mix of automation components – with no instructions. Teams had six weeks to transform their kit into a working robot designed to perform specific tasks. It is through the support of companies like Mouser that kits were supplied to 2,546 teams in 17 countries around the world. Four hundred teams will participate in the FRC Championship this week.

Mouser is also a major supporter of the FRC Dallas Regional as a “Friends of the Future” sponsor. The recent FRC Dallas Regional featured teams from Texas, surrounding states, Mexico and Brazil. Teams competed for various awards and the opportunity to advance to this week's coveted FIRST Championship.
