Mouser powers up with the Maxim Integrated MAX77818 switching mode battery charger for handheld devices

Mouser Electronics, Inc. is now stocking the MAX77818 Switching Mode Charger from Maxim Integrated.

Mouser Electronics, Inc. is now stocking the MAX77818 Switching Mode Charger from Maxim Integrated. One of the industry's smallest and fastest battery charging programmable switching mode chargers, this power management integrated circuit (PCIM) utilizes several charging states to safely and quickly charge a wide range of one-cell lithium ion (Li+) or lithium polymer (Li-poly) battery sizes and system loads. Based on Maxim's proprietary ModelGauge™ (mg5) fuel gauge technology, the MAX77818 features a dual-input, Smart Power Path 3.0A switch mode charger with frame ground (FG), reverse boost capability, and adapter input protection that withstands up to 16VDC.

The Maxim Integrated MAX77818 Switching Mode Charger, available from Mouser Electronics, features a high, 4.0MHz switching frequency on the DC-DC converter, which is ideally-suited for portable devices. This dual-input, switch-mode DC-DC converter includes integrated, low-loss switches, and allows the use of small components while eliminating excessive heat generation. The chip supports both buck and boost modes. Battery charge current on the MAX77818 is programmable from 0A to 3.0A, and the charger's two inputs accept adapter/USB (CHIN) and/or wireless type inputs (WCIN). The wireless input can simultaneously charge the battery while powering up USB-OTG type accessories, while the USB-OTG output provides true-load disconnect and is protected by an adjustable output current limit.

Using Maxim's Smart Power Selector architecture, the MAX77818 supplies up to 3.0A continuous (4A peak) buck mode current. A supplemental mode provides additional current from the battery to the system up to 4.5ARMS . Power not used for the system goes to charging the battery, and all power switches for charging and switching the system load between battery and adapter power are included on chip – no external MOSFETs are required. The battery charger includes Smart Power Path and I2 C adjustable settings to accommodate a wide range of battery sizes and system loads, and several safety features ensure reliable charging. The MAX77818 provides accurate battery fuel gauging without calibration and operates with extremely low battery current due to its ModelGauge (mg5) battery fuel gauge.

Maxim's Integrated MAX77818 Switching Mode Charger is available now through Mouser Electronics in a 72-bump, 3.867 mm × 3.608 mm WLP package, and is ideally suited for a variety of portable applications including smartphones, tablet computers, and other handheld devices.
