Mouser-Sponsored Solar Car Team Gearing up for Challenge

2014 Solar Car Challenge set for July 21st

July 16, 2014 – Mouser Electronics, Inc., a leading authorized distributor of semiconductors and electronic components, announced that for the third-consecutive year it is sponsoring the Ben Barber solar racing team of Mansfield, Texas, as it competes in the 2014 Solar Car Challenge.

This year's event is set for July 21-24 as teams from throughout the country race from Fort Worth to Austin in cars they design and build that are powered only by the Sun.

The Ben Barber Career Tech Academy solar racing team, sponsored by Mouser Electronics, last year finished 5th overall in a field of 14 teams, who hailed from as far away as New York and California.

Last year's team won the State Energy Conservation Award from the State of Texas. The Conservation Award is presented to the solar car team displaying outstanding engineering excellence. The team also received a special proclamation from the Texas State Senate.

The 2014 Solar Car Challenge will be a two-stage event – two days of racing at the Texas Motor Speedway (July 21-22); followed by two days of driving through the Texas Hill Country en route to Austin (July 23-24).

Mouser's sponsorship of the Ben Barber program has included providing the parts for the car, as well as giving recommendations on development of the vehicle.

“All of us here are Mouser Electronics are proud to once again support the Ben Barber solar racing team,” said Kevin Hess, Mouser's Vice President of Technical Marketing. “We are very pleased to have a role in supporting this enterprise and, perhaps more importantly, to motivate tomorrow's engineers to strive and excel in science, technology, engineering and math.”

Last year the Mansfield team, who call themselves The Shine Runners, used a car from a previous contest but the teens completely rebuilt it, trimming away 300 pounds and achieving a speed of 52 mph. The team has constructed a newer lighter-weight car for this year's competition.
