FRAM technology combines the speed, flexibility, and endurance of SRAM with the stability and reliability of flash at much lower power. The MSP430 ULP FRAM portfolio consists of a diverse set of devices featuring FRAM, the ULP 16-bit MSP430 CPU, and intelligent peripherals targeted for various applications. The ULP architecture showcases seven low-power modes, which are optimized to achieve extended battery life in energy-challenged applications. MSP430 has an embedded microcontroller with 16-bit RISC architecture up to 16-MHz clock and a supply range of 1.8 to 3.6 V. Its active mode is approximately 100 µA/MHz, while shutdown is 0.02 µA. The ultra-low-power FRAM features up to 64KB of nonvolatile memory and ultra-low-power writes. It has a 1015 write cycle endurance. Also included with the MSP430 are multifunction input and output ports, code security and encryption, and enhanced serial communication. The device incorporates a flexible clock system with 32 kHz crystals and high-frequency crystals. Development tools and software are provided. Applications range from metering and wearable electronics to sensor management and data logging.
