Subscription boxes are tremendously popular nowadays. From Birchbox to Club W, Barkbox to Dollar Shave Club, it seems like there’s a box out there for everyone.
At least, that’s the impression. One audience that’s been seemingly left out is geeks. And I don’t mean that in the mean, sort of condescending way; rather, the men and women who prefer comic books over hard covers, collectible Pez dispensers over baseball cards, and video games over board games.
There are a lot of us out there but unfortunately, no subscription service dedicated to delivering a monthly box of geeky goodness.
That’s all changed now — with the recent successful Kickstarter campaign Geek Fuel achieved, the company can now go into full-scale production.
The business model is simple: each month, the professional geeks at Geek Fuel put together a box of 6-8 quality items that appeal to the inner geek in all of us. Products will vary by month, and to give an example of just what they’ll be delivering to their subscribers, the folks at Geek Fuel sent me a first-round box to check out.
To put it simply, I was not disappointed. Included in my chocked-full Geek Fuel box:
• One Yoda Pez dispenser
• One packet of Halo MegaBloks
• One “Kitchen Overlord” Eye of Sauron (Lord of the Rings) pasta recipe / poster
• One deck of Prince Bride playing cards
• One Armor Hunters comic book
• One limited edition Geek Fuel graphic t-shirt
The point of the box is to appeal to as many different geeks as possible. From the company’s KickStarter page:
Geek Fuel will include some of the most recognized brands in entertainment as well as up and coming artists that want a fun and unique way to introduce their quality products to a new audience. In addition, we will produce and manufacture our own geek gear, which includes limited edition items exclusive to Geek Fuel. From time honored collectables, to exciting brands, to new Geek Fuel products, we have an unequaled array of items to satisfy your inner geek.
Various plans are available, including 1-month, 3-month, 6-month, and annual subscription options. Monthly box prices will range from $13.90 to $17.90 plus $6 for shipping and handling, per month depending on the plan selected.
Worth noting: my Geek Fuel gift box was a one-off, which means if I were to have ordered it through the website, it would have cost me $24. After pricing out the contents of the box, I came to discover the value of the box as being near $45. So, not only is this a cool gift to give someone / yourself, Geek Fuel is a wise investment, too!
