New ‘3D-printer’ for Do-It-Yourselfers

Cricut invents machine that can cut any kind of material

Artists, designers, costumers, come one and all: you’re definitely going to want a look at the Cricut Explore, a machine similar to a 3D printer that can cut any design that you want, in any conceivable material.

Cricut designed the machine specifically for do-it-yourself crafters, who lack the experience or equipment required for precision cuts.

“We are driven by the philosophy: How do we get from inspiration to creation?” said CEO Ashish Arora on Mashable. “How do we make it easy for people to create?”

Resembling a sleek white printer, the Explore can create precision-cut designs in paper, chipboard, vinyl and even leather, among others, using a cutting module that almost looks like an ink cartridge nozzle. The small blade within the module than chisels any type of design into your material, perfectly.

If you wanted to fold the fabric into a 3D shape or utilize your material in a different way, the module’s blade can be switched out for a marker or scoring tip, depending on your needs. Cricut has also created the cloud-based platform Design Space, where they’re storing thousands of DIY patterns or designs such as iPhone covers, decals or greeting cards created by professional designers. These professional designers showed off what the Explore let them create at the machine’s launch party in Salt Lake City, Utah:

Users can buy patterns from Design Space at $0.99 a pop, or pay a monthly subscription for use.
