Presenting an Ethernet throughput into the embedded market, the COMe-bBD6 is easily the most powerful computer-on-module (COM) Express on today’s market. The product’s vendor, Kontron, is a global frontrunner in embedded computing technology (ECT) and has been a noteworthy voice in the growing IoT movement. The company was also the first to maximize the Intel Xeon capabilities of a pure server headless design, which is based on the COM Express Specification Type6.

This new module is meant for high processing power in small form factors, but still meets requirements in the industrial automation markets, including applications with data packet analysis systems and edge analytics. It is expected to help with Kontron’s embracing of IoT technology. Equipped with a 2x serial interface and 2x DDR4 SODIMM dual channel for memory, the module also supports Linux, Windows, and VMware.

A COM Express is a compact PC that can be used either as a standalone computer or as a processor that can be plugged into a base board. The latter function cuts down the time and cost of developing a product, and helps extend its longevity. Designed for chip sets and serial signaling protocols, a COM Express has seven different versions that balance factors such as cost, features, and performance to present a prime product. Kontron supports three of the COM Express form factors, remaining deeply involved in the standard design’s new additions. Ultimately, the design delivers the highest performance of several small form factor (SFF) standards available.

Recognizing that the machine’s new improvements could lead to confusion among users, the Kontron team is ensuring that the COMe-bBD6 will be explained thoroughly. On July 13th , 2016, Kontron senior product manager Georg Vogl will host a webinar at 4 p.m. Berlin time (10 a.m. EST), followed by a second presentation at 6 p.m. Vogl plans to explain the machine’s intricacies and share the best ways to use the COMe-bBD6. Discussion of the environments best suited for the machine will also occur.

The COMe-bBD6 is one of many developments to this growing design. Now with Basic, Compact, Mini, and Rugged design groups, COM Express modules are clearly only contributing more to the technological field.
