New hydroponic system lets you grow produce with your smartphone

For anyone who has a vegetable garden or lives in unfit weather conditions, growing fresh fruits, veggies and herbs can be challenging and demanding.

Niwa Garden 01The Niwa system.

A Kickstarter campaign is aiming to resolve this issue and allow anyone to grow their own produce with Niwa, a fully connected greenhouse that can be controlled with a smartphone app.

You’ll need the hardware (actual garden environment) and the app in order to get started.

The Niwa team spent two years with farming experts in order to create the system equipped with a powerful microcontroller, sensors and actuators. The device can control humidity, temperature and light cycles. It also has an automated irrigation system that will water and feed the plants when they need.

You’ll be able to stay connected to your plants with a free app that’s available for iOS and Android devices. With it, you can watch your plants grow, track their progress, water them and control climate variables.

Once you become experienced you can even begin experimenting with your plants.

What can you grow? Tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, basil, mint, orchids, strawberries and daisies (just to name a few plants).

The Niwa team wants to start shipping these out in January but it will need help so there’s a Kickstarter campaign set up with 38 days to go.
