New ‘Infotainment System’ announced by Apple

Apple rebrands iOS connection to your car as CarPlay

Does anybody remember Apple’s attempt to install iOS into your car? Because I do not actually remember that occurring successfully, though I do remember it being talked about. Nevertheless, Apple is soldiering on with its idea to remake its in-car mobile operating system—they even have a fancy new name and everything. Take a look at the new CarPlay Infotainment System—I’m assuming the tagline has the words “fun and also educational” somewhere:

Apple CarPlay

Okay it literally just seems like an iPhone in your car instead of physically connected to your car

CarPlay is basically a “safer way” to connect an iPhone to your automobile, as far as I can tell: it lets you make calls, see or send your messages, listen to music, use Google Maps, and use Siri voice-control and touch-control, if you ever get bored with the standard low-fi buttons and knobs that also come with the system.

Yay GPS? You can also use it to play Beats Radio, Spotify, and other music apps. Educationally. I seriously do not get the hype.

For their new re-launch of the system, Apple has partnered with Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo manufacturers, and plans to introduce their system to half a dozen others later on. According to Mashable Apple will launch CarPlay as an update for iOS 7 on lightning-enabled iPhones like the 5, 5S and 5C.

I honestly do not see how Apple’s new system is any safer than physically hooking up your iPhone or other iOS-enabled device, but I suppose I’ll find out sometime this year, which is the most information we have on when cars supporting CarPlay will actually be on the road.

Keep your eyes peeled.
