We’ve become so accustomed to reaching for our smartphone when looking for the time, even when watching a fancy watch. Starting earlier this month, though, the Pebble smartwatch hit Best Buy's shelves in a bid to combine the two technologies in one smart, easy to use gadget.
This is the first time the Pebble will be offered in stores. The price is listed at $150 and it'll at first be available in only the color “Jet Black”. This offer is an exclusive retail partnership with Best Buy that brings the product to a store level allowing potential customers to try the smartwatch on and see it in person. So far, online and in stores, Pebble claims there are 85,000 “Pebblers” – people wearing their watch – out there.
For those unfamiliar with the watch, the Pebble is the first customizable smartwatch built with different watch faces, internet, Bluetooth, and a slight vibration when messages come in. It connects wirelessly to the smartphone in your pocket or purse and runs your apps, messages, emails, and music library from there. Pebble allows you to glace down at an important message when your hands are full, see an incoming email when sitting in a meeting, change the music on your smartphone while on a run, and see how fast you are walking or cycling down a road. Pebble, which lasts about a week before it needs to be charged, is fully water resistant and has an easy access bright light for dark atmospheres. And if that already wasn’t enough to wonder how a tiny watch can be home to the same interfaces as your smartphone, Pebble offers an open SDK for any user looking to write their own app for the smartwatch.
Currently, Jet Black is the only color available in stores and Orange, Grey, and Arctic White are sold through the website. A Cherry Red Pebble will be available on the website in August. If you take a visit to their website you can pre-order the Pebble online and a notification will be sent out when the Pebble is ready to ship.
