Due to such frequency, it’s become the norm to see reports of malfunctioning hoverboards catching fire or exploding.
But now, Underwriters Laboratories (UL), the independent testing firm several electronics manufacturers use for safety certification, has opened a program specifically designed for testing hoverboards.
Its “UL 2272” certification will focus on the gadget’s rechargeable battery and charger system together with what UL deems as “self-balancing scooters.” While the company has tested battery cells, power supplies, and chargers for years, this is the first time an entire hoverboard will be evaluated for electrical and fire safety.
“As recent news has shown us, there is a strong need for this type of service, and we are pleased to offer our testing and certification services to manufacturers and distributors,” Jeff Smidt, vice president and general manager for UL's Energy and Power Technologies division, said.
Those devices that pass the testing will be listed in UL’s online certifications directory, placed under a safety mark recognized by those around the world.
Nonetheless, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission will continue to investigate numerous companies that make or sell hoverboards. Last month, the commission examined at least 48 hoverboard fires in 20 states. The investigations will focus on the devices’ lithium-ion battery packs, as well as the interaction with the circuit boards inside.
But with the launch of UL’s new program, hoverboard manufacturers will no longer have an excuse not to have their devices tested for safety. While it is working towards paving the way for completely secure hoverboards, this will at least be a more reliable method towards purchasing brands that ensure safety.
