We’ve all done it — you try to plug the USB wire into its port only to discover that it needs to be flipped around in order to fit.
Just to confirm that it’s definitely not fitting, we jam it in again . . . and again . . . and again (for good measure, of course).
Well, the days of having to deal with this minor headache will soon be behind us. According to the USB Implementers Forum, a new connector design, complete with a symmetrical USB head, will be completed by this July.
Referred to as the “Type-C,” the symmetrical head means the cable can be plugged in without worrying about the plug’s orientation or the cable’s direction.
The new standard is meant to replace today’s USB and Micro USB designs, and will be approximately the same as the latter.
It might be a while, though, before we see it in use, as the rollout of new ports will take a bit of time for manufacturers to incorporate them into their products.
When they are in use, though, other improvements that users can expect to enjoy with the new wire include:
• Support for scalable power charging, giving the cable the ability to offer up to 100 watts
• Data transfer speeds of up to 10 gigabits / second, roughly twice as much as what’s possible now
• A design that will allow for future upgrades
