Next-Gen USB Plug Finally Reversible

Smaller and much more convenient USB plug

We’ve all experienced USB frustration—spending 20 minutes shoving the connector toward the receptacle again and again, hoping the gods will be kind and it just works this time, and wondering why with all of the fantastic technology we create, the stupid things can’t just be reversible. Well, the next new USB plug to hit consumer shelves will finally be reversible, putting an end to all of those tears. Called Type-C, the new connector will be reversible just like the connector for Apple Lightning.

While there is no final release date for the connector, the Type-C is reportedly scheduled to be finalized by the middle of next year. Developed by the USB 3.0 Promoter Group, the Type-C is designed for the USB 3.1 specification. The size of a MicroUSB plug, the Type-C comes with an exciting array of features including scalable power charging and support for data rates close to 10 Gbits/s.  There is no picture of the connector currently released, but the connector certainly fills a much needed space in the USB market.

While USB technology is well established as the favored choice for connecting and powering devices, we recognize the need to develop a new connector to meet evolving design trends in terms of size and usability,” said Brad Saunders, USB 3.0 Promoter Group Chairman, in a released statement today (read it here). “The new Type-C connector will fit well with the market's direction and affords an opportunity to lay a foundation for future versions of USB.”

The new connector will not be compatible with current USB plugs and receptacles, which is seemingly its one drawback. But as its usability seems to be far greater than any of those current plugs and receptacles, it’s definitely worth shoving all of your other MicroUSB cables into your probably overflowing obsolete tech junk drawer.
