A new SMT inductor series gives the engineer lower DCR and reduced size for DC-to-DC converter designs. The inductors are an upgrade from standard ferrite-based shielded power inductors. Molded metal composite construction provides high-saturation-current characteristics, higher-frequency performance, and higher efficiency.
The NPMH series power inductors are available in 0603, 0805, 0806, 1008, and 1210 case sizes with heights from 0.8 to 2.8 mm. The series offers inductance values ranging from 0.24 to 2.2 uH (±20%). There are a total of 47 devices in 10 case sizes in the series. Operation temperature is –40°C to 125°C. All performance figures are 2 MHz.
The 0603 size, for example, comes with 0.24-, 0.33-, or 0.47-uH values and saturation currents (inductance –30%) of 3.2 to 2.2 A. Maximum RMS current is 2.6, 2.2, and 1.6 A, and DCR is 54, 75, and 100 mΩ.
The 2.8-mm-thick 1210 package, the largest case size, offers values of 1.0, 1.5, and 2.2 µH with Isat of 6.0, 5.5, and 4.8 A, respectively. Maximum RMS current is 3.5, 3.2, or 3.0 A, and their DCR is 34, 45, and 60 mΩ.
