Nokia develops smartwatch of the future

New multi-screen wearable smartwatch

Smartphones appear to be fast becoming a thing of the past. While there are new developments in smartphones and touchscreens every day, most technology companies these days have been researching or developing versions of “wearable tech.” These mostly mean infusing touchscreens and gadgets into t-shirts or shoes.

The “smartwatch” seems to an area of particular interest to many of these companies, with smartphone mogul Nokia the newest company to announce their development of wearable tech, code-named “Facet,” that was recently awarded patent approval and will is currently being worked on by Nokia developers.

A multiscreened smartwatch, “Facet” is essentially a wristband of segmented touchscreens all displaying different information for the user, from time, to weather, to e-mail, and so on. There will be at least four segments, each with its own touchscreen, and according to the patent images, the touchscreens will also be able to pop out of each segment and be rearranged. The design seems accessible and friendly, easily a gadget that could top the list of “must-haves” in the next year or so.

A user can also move apps from touchscreen to touchscreen with the slide of a finger, so every application can be moved with ease to the top segment when the user wishes to access it. Applications can be expanded or collapsed on the wearable accessory, like on a regular smartphone or touchscreen, only with far more ease of access and versatility.

While there is no word yet on when Facet will be released, the concept itself is certainly intriguing and Nokia has proposed one of the better smartwatch designs that we have seen in recent years. If wearable tech is the future, then Nokia’s Facet design is not a bad way to start.
