Novel tantalum capacitor design saves PCB space
‘Undertab’ terminations reduce ESL in consumer handheld applications
A proprietary termination design on the TLN Series MnO2 and TCN Series polymer tantalum capacitors is said to reduce the required internal construction space by up to 60% and enable devices to be positioned very closely together. The capacitors fit applications requiring high capacitance in a miniature package, including handheld consumer products such as mobile phones and MP3 players, as well as power-line and audio-circuit designs.
In the new configuration, J leads are replaced by “undertab” terminations that do not protrude outside the outline of the case, increasing volumetric efficiency and enabling PCB mounting pads to be spaced only slightly wider than the part itself. The package construction features a second electrode, which results in lower ESL to improve frequency range. Ignition resistance is also significantly improved with the TCN Series.
The smallest devices measure 1 mm high. Capacitance range is 22 to 680 µF (±20%), and working voltage range 4 to 10 V. (TLN, from $0.24; TCN, from $0.39 — 14 weeks ARO.)
